New page

ru:Добавление эффектов на проекцию en:Adding Effects to a Projection
An effect on a projection works differently than in a layout. In a layout, the picture is laid on the Mapping field, and the fixture takes its color from the point where it is drawn on the mapping. In a projection, the picture is laid on the projector's frame in the three-dimensional scene, and the fixture takes its color from the point where it lands in real space. That's why a wave, a stripe, or a running beam of light passes through the volume of the object — across a facade with several walls, around a column, along an arch — regardless of how the fixtures are arranged on the mapping.

Such an effect is placed in a separate projection row in the Timeline window. Inside the row it lives by the usual rules: it is moved in time, stretched, given keyframes, assigned a blend mode and opacity. The only difference is where it is drawn and which fixtures it reaches.

This article is about how to place an effect on a projection and what happens to it afterward. How to create the projector itself and aim it — see Создание проекции; a breakdown of its parameters — Настройки проекции.

What you need before you start
* A projection has been created in the scene, aimed at the object, and its frame covers the needed fixtures — see Создание проекции.
* The fixtures that should light up are placed in 3D inside the beam box and linked to the mapping fixtures — see Linking 2D and 3D.
* The composition you are assembling the animation in is open: every composition has a projection row, but the effects in it are specific to each composition.

How to add an effect
# In the Timeline window, find the row with the projection's name — for example Проекция001. It sits in the common list next to the layout rows.
# Click the projection row to select it. This is the key step: a new effect always goes into whichever row is selected, and if a layout is selected, the effect will go into the layout and nothing will appear on the projection.
# Open the Effects window — the Effects button on the Timeline toolbar.
# Choose an effect and add it: double-click the effect tile, click the plus icon at its center, or right-click → Add.
# The effect appears in the projection row, at the top of its list, and spans the full length of the composition. A collapsed row expands automatically.
# Place the playback cursor over the effect's strip — the fixtures in the projector's beam light up.

An effect can also simply be dragged from the Effects window directly onto the projection row — in that case there's no need to select the row beforehand.

After that, the effect is configured as usual: duration and position on the timeline — Arranging Effects in Time, parameters and their animation — Keyframes and Effect Parameters.

How an effect on a projection differs from an effect in a layout
!! In a layout !! On a projection
Where the picture is drawn || On the Mapping field, within the layout's boundaries || In the projector's frame in the three-dimensional scene
Which fixtures light up || Those that fall within the layout's area on the mapping || Those that fall within the beam box in 3D
What sets the picture's resolution || The layout's size || The projection's Texture Size parameter
How to aim at the needed fixtures || Change the layout's boundaries on the mapping || Move the projector and change its frame's Width and Height

They have more in common than differences: in both cases effects stack on top of each other, blend modes work, as do opacity, keyframes and functions, and the result equally ends up in the preview, in Art-Net, and in exported
*.cue
files.

The projection effect's picture itself does not appear on the Mapping field — there you can only see how it lights up the fixtures. To see exactly what is being projected, use the 3D View window.

Order of effects within a projection
A projection can hold any number of effects. They stack the same way as in a layout: the one that is higher in the list is drawn over the ones below, taking into account its own blend mode and opacity. The order is changed by dragging the effect rows within the projection.

The checkbox next to an effect's name turns that effect off by itself; the checkbox next to the projection row turns off all of its effects at once. The latter is handy for quickly comparing how the object looks with and without the projection.

Moving an effect from a layout to a projection and back
A finished effect doesn't need to be rebuilt from scratch: take its row in the Timeline and drag it into the projection row. All parameters, keyframes, blend mode, and position on the timeline are preserved — the effect simply starts being drawn in the projector's frame instead of the layout. It is moved back into any layout the same way.

One thing always changes when moving: the canvas size the effect is calculated for — in a projection that's the projector's Texture Size. If the frame's and the layout's proportions differ significantly, the picture will look different after the move: stripes will become narrower or wider, a circle will stretch. This is not a settings malfunction but a recalculation for the new area; adjust the parameter values if needed.

The same drag-and-drop is used to move images, sequences, and videos added to the timeline into a projection — they live in the projection row on the same terms as effects from the library.

If there are several projections
An effect belongs to exactly one projection — the one whose row it is in. To have the same picture come from two projectors, make a copy: right-click the effect → Duplicate — and drag the copy into the second projection's row. The copy remains an independent effect: edits to one do not affect the other.

An effect can only be moved to another projection by dragging its row — there is no separate projector selector in the effect's properties.

How to see what is being projected
For the selected projection, its frame in the 3D View window shows a semi-transparent picture. What it shows depends on the selection, which is convenient for checking:

* the projection is selected (by clicking it in the scene or its row in the 3D Objects window) — the frame shows everything the projector is currently outputting: all its effects, stacked together, exactly as they will fall on the fixtures;
* a single projection effect is selected (by clicking it in the Timeline) — the frame shows only that effect. This makes it easier to understand which of several effects is causing extra illumination or why the picture isn't where expected.

If the frame with the picture isn't visible at all, the display of auxiliary objects has been turned off with the F4 key — turn it back on.

Texture size and proportions
All effects of one projection are calculated into a shared picture, whose size is set by the Texture Size parameter in the Properties window of the projection (1024 × 1024 by default). Change it, and all effects of that projection are recalculated for the new size immediately.

Worth remembering:

* The picture is stretched across the entire frame. If the frame is elongated in width while the texture stays square, a circle in the effect will turn into an oval. To keep the proportions, set the Texture Size in roughly the same proportions as the frame's Width and Height.
* Texture size is level of detail. A fine picture, thin stripes, and text on a large facade require a larger texture; if there are few fixtures and the picture is large, there's no point in increasing it — a larger texture takes longer to calculate and loads the graphics card more.

For more on these parameters, see Настройки проекции.

If the effect isn't visible on the fixtures
* Nothing has changed on the fixtures. Check which row the effect ended up in: most likely it went into a layout, because the wrong row was selected when it was added. Drag it into the projection row.
* The effect is in the projection, but the fixtures are dark. The playback cursor must be within the effect's strip. Then check the checkboxes — on the effect itself and on the projection row — and its opacity.
* Only some of the fixtures light up. The rest are outside the frame or the beam's zone of action: select the projection and check whether its frame covers the needed fixtures. If necessary, increase the frame's Width and Height or loosen the From and To constraints — see Создание проекции.
* The picture appears where it wasn't expected. The projector is aimed at a different angle: what the projector sees is exactly what will land on the fixtures. Select the projection and check against the picture in its frame.
* The effect is covered by another. An opaque effect positioned higher in the projection row covers the ones below it. Swap their order or reduce the opacity of the one on top.
* The projection is empty in another composition. That's expected: the projector is shared across the project, but the effects in it are specific to each composition. Add the effect to the projection row there as well.
